How to choose an activewear manufacturer: a checklist for brands

Request a quoteSee samples in California

How do you choose an activewear manufacturer?

Choose in two passes. First check fit: the manufacturer should make your category on its own production lines, its minimum order should match your first run, and its sampling and production times should fit your launch date. Then verify: handle a physical sample, confirm who actually cuts and sews the garments, and agree the specification, price, delivery date and payment terms in writing before bulk production starts.

Is it a factory or a trading company?

A factory runs its own cutting and sewing lines; a trading company takes your order and places it with factories it works with. Either can deliver good garments, but you should know which one you are dealing with, because it changes who controls quality, timing and communication. Ask where your order will be cut and sewn, and ask to see that production floor in person or on a live video call. Some manufacturers run both a factory and a trading operation, so ask which part of your order each one handles.

Does it make your category in-house?

Knitted activewear such as leggings, sports bras and seamless pieces uses different machines, fabrics and sewing skills from woven garments or outerwear. A manufacturer that lists many categories may make some of them itself and source the rest. Ask which categories make up most of its own production, and ask to see finished samples in your category rather than in a different one.

Do its minimums fit your first order?

Minimum order quantities are set per style, per colour, per order, or a mix of these. A minimum per colour multiplies quickly, because every extra colour of the same style needs its own minimum. Ask how the minimum is counted, whether sizes can be mixed within it, and whether existing stock styles have a lower minimum than custom development.

How long do sampling and production take?

Ask for the sampling time and the bulk production time separately, and ask when each clock starts. Lead times usually start once the specification, fabric and colours are confirmed, not on the day of the first message. Ask whether a quoted time includes shipping, because the shipping method and destination can change the total delivery time considerably.

Can you see a physical sample before you commit?

Photos and videos cannot show hand-feel, stretch, recovery or whether a fabric turns see-through when it is stretched. Handling a physical sample is the most direct way to judge these. If a manufacturer has a showroom or sample room in your market, ask whether you can view samples there before ordering.

Can it support your design and branding?

Some brands arrive with a complete tech pack; others arrive with a reference garment and a sketch. Ask whether the manufacturer can develop patterns from a reference, suggest suitable fabrics and apply your logo, and ask to see each logo method on a finished garment.

What should you agree in writing before bulk production?

ItemWhy it matters
Approved sampleBulk production is checked against the sample both sides signed off.
Fabric composition and weightThe same style in a different fabric fits, feels and wears differently.
Colour standardA physical colour reference avoids disputes about shade between batches.
Size specificationA measurement chart with tolerances is how fit is checked in bulk.
Labels and packingCare labels, size labels, swing tags and folding all need to be specified.
Delivery date and termsState whether the date is the ex-factory date or the arrival date, and who pays for shipping.
Payment termsAgree the deposit, the balance and what triggers the balance payment.

How do you check that a manufacturer is real?

Ask for the business licence and check that the company name on it matches the name on the contract and on the bank account. If a manufacturer claims a certification, ask for the certificate itself and check its scope, holder name and expiry date. A live video walk-through of the cutting, sewing and packing areas tells you more than a gallery of photos.

Frequently asked questions

What should I ask an activewear manufacturer before ordering?

Ask whether it makes your category in its own factory, how its minimum order is counted, how long sampling and bulk production take, and whether you can handle a physical sample. Then agree the approved sample, fabric, colours, sizes, packing, delivery date and payment terms in writing.

Is it better to work with a factory or a trading company?

Neither is automatically better. A factory gives you direct contact with production, while a trading company can combine several factories and handle communication for you. What matters is knowing which one you are dealing with and who is responsible for quality and delivery.

How do I verify an activewear manufacturer in China?

Check the business licence against the contract and bank details, ask for a live video walk-through of the production floor, and approve a physical sample before bulk. Whenever a certification is claimed, ask for the certificate itself and check its scope and expiry date.
